The destination

About the Old San Juan District

Old San Juan is the walled colonial district of San Juan, laid out on an islet at the mouth of a deep natural harbour. Three miles of fifty-foot wall, finished in 1678, still ring it, with Castillo San Felipe del Morro on the headland at one end and Castillo San Cristóbal facing the land at the other. Both, with La Fortaleza, were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1983. Almost all of it is free to walk, which surprises people who have budgeted for a ticket.

What is inside the walls

Two forts that charge, one governor's residence that runs free tours you have to book, a cathedral that costs nothing, and a great deal of open street. Knowing which is which before you arrive is most of the planning, and it takes about five minutes.

The history of the city

A Spanish garrison town fortified for three and a half centuries because whoever held this harbour held the sea lane home. La Fortaleza from 1533, El Morro from 1539, San Cristóbal from 1634 and the wall closed in 1678, then the United States in 1898.

Planning your visit

The forts open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily and charge $10 for an adult, with a receipt valid at both for 24 hours. They take no cash. Everything outside them has no closing time at all, and the streets are the reason to come.

Six things worth walking to, four of them free, and all of them inside a district you can cross in twenty-five minutes. Most Old San Juan guided tours reach four or five of them, and the Catedral de San Juan Bautista appears on more published routes than any other single building.

Castillo San Felipe del MorroSix levels stepping down a 140-foot headland at the mouth of the bay, begun in 1539 and finished around 1790. The green esplanade in front of it is where San Juan flies kites.
Castillo San CristóbalThe land defence, dating from 1634 and spread over 27 acres of tunnels and outworks. The National Park Service calls it the largest fortress built in the Americas.

The streets, the plazas, the Paseo de la Princesa and the whole outside of the city wall are open ground with no gate and no closing time. You pay for exactly two things: entry to the forts, and any museum that charges its own admission. If you arrive by ship you are already inside the district, because piers 3 and 4 sit on the south shore.

$10.00 for an adult, free for children of 15 and under, and the receipt is valid for 24 hours at both fortifications. There is a $35.00 annual pass covering up to four adults. The park does not accept cash and takes cards and contactless instead, which is the most common way to arrive at a gate and not get in. Old San Juan ticket prices for the forts are the park's own figures.

Piers 3 and 4 are inside the old city, so unlike most ports there is no transfer to build in. Work backwards from your all-aboard time, subtract an hour of slack, and book something that finishes inside what is left. The Pan-American pier is the exception and is not within walking distance.

Do You Need a Guided Tour of Old San Juan at All?

For finding your way around, no, and it is worth saying so plainly. The district is seven blocks square with water on three sides and a fort at each end. Walk downhill and you reach the sea. Nobody gets properly lost here, and the streets, the plazas, the wall and the Paseo del Morro cost nothing at any hour.

What you are actually buying is three other things: the story behind what you are looking at, a guide who manages the heat rather than leaving you to it, and somebody who knows which doors are open today — the Cathedral publishes no visiting hours anywhere we can cite, and the governor's residence is a working government building. Guided tours of Old San Juan earn their fare on those, not on directions.

How an Old San Juan Walking Tour Runs

Meet inside the walls

Plaza Colón, Plaza Dársenas, Calle Tetuán or Plaza de San José. Every walking tour here starts within the old city, so there is nothing to arrange to get to it.

Walk the plazas

Plaza de Armas with the Alcaldía on it, Plaza de San José above the church, and the streets between them. This is where the guide earns the fare.

Down to the wall and the gate

La Puerta de San Juan at the foot of fifty feet of masonry, with the bay on the other side of it. Free, and on almost every route.

Inside a fort, if your fare covers it

Forty-five minutes to an hour at El Morro or Castillo San Cristóbal, with the $10 entrance already paid on the tours that include it.

Finish where you can keep going

Most walks end near Plaza de Armas or the Cathedral, in the middle of the shops and the restaurants, so the afternoon is yours.

How much do Old San Juan tours cost?

Guided walks start at $34.99 for a four-hour historical walk with transport and $39 for the classic two-and-a-quarter-hour loop. Fort walks with the entrance ticket included run $54 to $59. Food tours are the top of the range at $109 to $170, because the fare is buying you a meal as well as a guide.

Do I need a ticket to walk around Old San Juan?

No. The streets, the plazas, the Paseo de la Princesa and the outside of the city wall are all free to walk at any hour. You only pay to go inside the two forts, and to enter any museum or attraction that charges its own admission.

How much is entry to El Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal?

The National Park Service charges $10.00 for an adult, and children of 15 and under go free. There is also a $35.00 SAJU annual pass covering entrance for up to four adults, and the America the Beautiful pass is accepted. Those are the park's own published figures, not ours, and the park is where you buy them.

Does one ticket cover both forts?

Yes, and this is the single most useful thing to know before you plan a day here. The park states that your receipt is valid for 24 hours to access both fortifications, so one $10 payment gets you into Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, and you can split them across two days.

Do the forts take cash?

No. The National Park Service states plainly that this park does not accept cash, and takes all major credit cards and contactless payments instead. It catches more people out at the gate than any other rule here, so bring a card even if you are carrying dollars for lunch.

What are the fort opening hours?

Both fortifications can be explored every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, according to the park's own Plan Your Visit page. Some older listings still say 6:00 pm; plan for five and you will never be turned away. The streets outside them have no closing time at all.

Do I need to book a tour in advance?

For the small-group walks and both food tours, yes. The food tours run to fourteen and eighteen places and one of them is flagged as likely to sell out. The larger fort walks take up to forty and are easier at short notice, but a cruise day gives you no second chance if the one you want is full.

How long is a typical Old San Juan walking tour?

Two to two and a half hours is the standard, and that is enough to cover the plazas, the Cathedral, the wall and one fort. The half-day options run four to five hours and add shopping or a meal. Full days at six to eight hours leave the walls entirely for a distillery or for Loíza.

Which Old San Juan tours include fort admission?

Some state the entrance fee in their own inclusions: the El Morro walk, the San Cristóbal walk, the private forts walk and the five-hour group walk with the fort. One states the opposite and excludes the El Morro fee by name. The rest either do not go inside or say nothing either way, and where a listing says nothing we claim nothing.

Can I visit La Fortaleza, the governor's residence?

Yes, and it is free. The Governor's office runs guided tours in English and Spanish, Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, covering the first level, the circular tower, the wall terrace and the gardens. Everyone aged 18 or over must show valid photo ID or a passport at security, and without it you cannot join. Book through the request form on the official site or by phone.

What should I wear for a walking tour here?

Closed shoes with grip, because the adoquín cobbles are uneven and polish up slick in rain. One operator asks for proper shoes and no sandals outright. If a church is on your route, cover your shoulders and knees, and note that La Fortaleza enforces its own dress code at the gate.

Is the old city walkable if I have limited mobility?

Parts of it are, and the streets are steeper than photographs suggest. Three listings declare wheelchair access, including the hour-long photo walk, and several more declare stroller access without step-free access. The golf-car tour removes the hills entirely and publishes a step to help you on and off.

What is the best Old San Juan walking tour for a first visit?

For a first visit, the two-and-a-quarter-hour classic loop covers the widest spread of the old city for $39 and starts near the piers. If you would rather spend forty-five minutes inside a fort with the ticket already paid, the El Morro walk does that for $54. Both are rated 4.8 or better across hundreds of reviews.

Can I fit a tour into a cruise day?

Yes, and more easily than in most ports, because the piers are inside the old city rather than a bus ride from it. Two of the walks meet within a few minutes of piers 3 and 4. Work backwards from your all-aboard time rather than forwards from the gangway, and leave an hour of slack.

Beyond the Walls

Three things within reach of the same day, and none of them inside the old city.

Casa Bacardí and Ron del Barrilito

Across the bay and inland respectively, and three products here go to one or the other with the distillery admission inside the fare. The Bacardí day carries a minimum age of eighteen.

Loíza and the north coast

East of the city, built around the African-descended culture of the coast rather than the Spanish colonial town. The widest-ranging day of the lot, and the one that gives the old city the least of its own time.

Condado and Isla Verde

The beach districts twenty minutes east, where most visitors stay. One private driving tour starts at a Condado hotel rather than inside the walls, and several tours will collect you from either.
